"Books are the ultimate Dumpees: put them down and they’ll wait for you forever; pay attention to them and they always love you back."Two weeks, two John Green books down! Personally, for someone who has barely read lately, I'm on a roll. I'll be starting Anna and the French Kiss afterwards, but I'm actually going to do some homework after this post. I'm kind of worried though, because A&TFK is a bit of a long book, compared to Paper Towns and AAOK and I have to return the books I have from the public library by June 2nd. And I already have a $10 fine (don't ask).
Anyway, enough about my reading schedule! I'm sure I'll be able to finish it, considering everyone keeps saying that the book is amazing, and I did read the start at the beginning of the year, but I never finished it. So, I'm hoping that it'll live up my expectations (I'm pretty sure it will) and I'll be able to finish my last two books and then return them to the library.
Now, enough about the other books! I'll be discussing Katherines under the cut. There will be spoilers -- you have been forewarned. If you want to find out what the book's about without reading spoilers, I have written a review here.
I literally began reading An Abundance of Katherines a week ago, a day after I had finished Paper Towns. It wasn't particularly what I was expecting, especially after with a novel with so much depth like Paper Towns. However, AAOK is pretty amazing in it's own way, despite its differences.
With Q and Colin, you see that they're smarter than average, but there are some things that they can't grasp because their intelligence is essentially just being book smart. The difference between Q and Colin is that Colin is more of a 'freak' to the people around him, being a prodigy that has been trained to become a genius. He thinks that he will be worth something if he's extremely smart. And that's a bit sad, but he can't see any reason as to why anyone would like him. His friend, Hassan, is constantly making fun of him, and he has been dumped by 19 Katherines (technically 17, since he didn't dump Katherine III and Katherine I and K-19 are the same person. But anyway).
Colin can sort of be a twat at times, I'll agree, but I think he's just struggling to find out who he is and who he is now. And I just think although he's strange, he's a good person deep down, even if he doesn't know what he wants. Hassan shares some of the same qualities as Ben from Paper Towns, but I ultimately enjoyed reading about Hassan a lot more because he is funnier.
Also, I really expected the ending. I could tell Colin was in like with Lindsey, I could just tell. And I had a really strong feeling, particularly after Lindsey helped him with the Theorem, something might've happened with them. So when they kissed in the final chapter, I might've squealed. (Okay, I really did squeal.) I think it was a nice touch that Colin's streak of Katherines was started and ended with Katherine the Great. It was like he had never really gotten closure from that first relationship and although it hurt, Lindsey was able to help put the hurt behind him and ugh they're just perfect.
Also another thing that made AAOK different: it gets a happy ending. I'm not quite sure what would happen to Lindsey when Hassan and Colin go back to Chicago, but I think with the character development Lindsey did in the novel, she might come back to visit them after she tries to help Hollis out in Gutshot. So I'm excited for that. I also nearly had a heart attack when Colin predicted that Lindsey was going to dump him in four days, and she left the note. When she wrote P.S. Just kidding, I thought she was just kidding because she wasn't in love with Hassan, but she was going to break up with him anyway.
Thank the sweet lord baby Jesus I reread that.
I even tried reading how the Theorem worked, but I'm not maths student so yep, I gave up on that. Too confusing for my poor little brain.
So in conclusion I just really freaking loved An Abundance of Katherines and I am emotionally invested in characters okay.
Yours in weirdness,
Tash.
